Avery grew up sailing Optimists, 420s, and J22s out of Newport and Narragansett Bay and Saunderstown Yacht Club in the summers. She sailed competitively for The Prout School where she was Captain (2019-21) where she brought Prout to qualify for the NESSA Rebecca Herreshoff Trophy for the first time. Avery ranked 1st in 2019 420 Season's Points and placed 2nd in A Division at RI States Sailing Championship in 420s. Avery now holds the position of Captain and continues to skipper for the GW Sailing Women's team.
